With every iteration of state and federal leadership, thousands of people anxiously wait to see how it's going to affect their healthcare. Queer veterans that were thanked for their service sit in heavy silence wondering if their rights are going to be stripped away due to their identity. Families watch the news and follow articles daily to see if their transgender child will be able to live as themselves when they grow up. While the change in insurance coverage may seem like just another inconvenience in costs for some, the price is much higher for those who do not identify the same way as their peers.
32% to 50% of transgender adults and youth attempt suicide in their lifetime. The reasons vary from being rejected by family, lack of access to therapy, and gender dysphoria to name a few. While there are groups out there that are doing their best to help them get access to care, we do not believe that there can be too many avenues for people who need it. To get this message to the masses, art is a language that does not need words. We hope to use art to not only educate people on the mental toll this lack of care creates, but secure a way to help the humans that often get left behind or outright erased from decisions that affect their mental and physical well-being.
This Non-profit will focus on gender-affirming surgery and after care (such as living costs) so they can heal properly without worrying about missing work. This won't solve everything, but it can help them feel more themselves when they look in the mirror. No human should feel like they don't matter. And for those of us who have people in our lives that are being denied this care, we are also sitting in the dark... crossing our fingers and wishing on every star that the world does not get too heavy for them.
